Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is how you use a Windows VPS. It shows the server's full desktop in a window on your own device, so you can install software, open a browser and run programs as if the machine were under your desk. This guide covers every device, then the fixes for the errors people hit most often.
What you need before you start
- The IP address of your VPS, for example 203.0.113.25.
- The username. On a fresh Windows Server it is
Administrator. - The password. At Volt Serv, your login details are in your welcome email and in the client area under your service.
If you have just ordered, your server is deployed in about 60 seconds. Give Windows another minute to finish its first boot, where it applies your IP address and password. Remote Desktop refuses connections until that is done.
Connect from Windows 10 or 11
- Press Win + R, type
mstscand press Enter. This opens Remote Desktop Connection. - In Computer, type your server's IP address and click Connect.
- When asked for credentials, click More choices, then Use a different account. Enter
Administratorand your password. - Accept the certificate warning the first time. A new server uses a self-signed certificate, which is normal. Tick "Don't ask me again for connections to this computer".
Tip: click Show Options before connecting and save the connection as an .rdp file on your desktop. Next time, a double click is all it takes.
Connect from a Mac
- Install Windows App from the Mac App Store. It is Microsoft's free client and the new name of the Microsoft Remote Desktop app.
- Click + and choose Add PC.
- Enter the IP address as the PC name, then add a credential with
Administratorand your password. - Save, then double-click the new tile to connect. Click Continue at the certificate prompt.
Connect from iPhone, iPad or Android
Install Microsoft's Windows App from the App Store or Google Play (some Android devices still offer the older Microsoft Remote Desktop app, which works the same way). Add a PC with your IP address and credentials, then tap it to connect. A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse make a phone or tablet surprisingly usable for quick admin jobs.
Copy files and text to your VPS
- Clipboard: copying and pasting text and files works in both directions by default.
- Local drives: in Remote Desktop Connection, go to Show Options, Local Resources, More, and tick the drives you want. They appear under This PC on the server.
- Large files: for anything over a few GB, upload to cloud storage and download it from the server. The server's own connection is much faster than copying through RDP.
Fixing common connection problems
"Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer"
Your device could not reach the server at all. Check the IP address for typos. If you have just ordered, wait a few more minutes. If you changed the RDP port, add it after the IP, like 203.0.113.25:3390. RDP uses TCP port 3389 by default, and our port checker shows whether it is reachable from outside.
Error 0x204 on Mac or mobile
This is the Windows App's version of the same problem: the server did not answer on the RDP port, so the checks are identical. Some office, school and hotel networks block port 3389. Try your phone's hotspot to rule that out.
"Your credentials did not work"
Type the password by hand instead of pasting it, because a stray space at the end will break it. Make sure the username is exactly Administrator. If you have changed the password and forgotten it, open a support ticket. The console in your client area still shows the server's sign-in screen if you need it.
The session connects, then freezes or drops
Usually the server is out of memory. Open Task Manager inside the session and look at Memory. If it stays above 90%, close heavy programs or move to a plan with more RAM. A server that is completely unresponsive can be restarted from the client area.
Good habits for every session
- Disconnect or sign out on purpose. Closing the RDP window disconnects you but leaves your programs running, which is what you want for bots, trading terminals and long downloads. Choose Sign out when you are finished, so the session's memory is freed.
- Change the password to a long, unique one. Use our password generator, then press Ctrl + Alt + End inside the session and choose Change a password.
- Lock RDP down. Our guide to securing a Windows VPS shows how to limit Remote Desktop to your own IP address.
